Tuition and fees are waived for those students who receive full financial support in the form of teaching assistantships, which is the main form of financial support that is offered through the department. Teaching Assistantship positions are competitive and currently 8 of our graduate students receive financial support in the form of teaching assistantships. Teaching assistant positions are for a total of two years (4 semesters) and include a full tuition waiver and a $16,500/year stipend. Receiving financial aid usually means teaching two to three introductory lab classes in the afternoons to non-science majors. Students awarded with a teaching assistantship are provided a computer. Geology T.A.s have access to an Apple Mac Mini computer in their office cubicle with a variety of installed software and environmental science T.A.s get access to PCs.
Master of science students in geology have access to the Geology Adkins fund. These funds provide up to $3,000/per student (whether TA or not). One of the requirements to access the fund is to finish the proposal and budget by the end of the second semester in the program. In addition, we strongly encourage every student to apply for external grants and discuss potential grant proposals with their research advisor.
